Diary of an improved eater

When I first met my nutritionist, Ashley Koff, R.D., she asked me to write down every single bite of food I ate. My early journal entries were eye-opening, to say the least--my days were filled with pizza, candy bars, and cookies. But as time went on, I stopped (I had good enough habits that I didn't need to monitor every meal). So I thought it would be interesting to do it again for a day and see how my diet has changed. Here's what I ate yesterday:

9 a.m.: Egg white scramble with roasted red and yellow peppers, non-fat latte
11 a.m.: apple, diet soda
1:30 p.m.: salad with grilled shrimp and balsamic vinaigrette
4 p.m.: banana, low-fat blueberry yogurt, handful of almonds
5 p.m.: diet soda
8 p.m.: chicken tandoori, half a piece of whole-wheat naan (Indian bread), 2 low-carb beers, and one bite (literally, just a taste) of my friend’s birthday cake

Overall, I think the day was a smashing success. By allowing myself the beer and bite of cake, I didn't feel like I was missing out on the celebration.
