The Rainbow Nikes You Need for Pride 2017

Every June, rainbow parades explode across New York City in honor of LGBT Pride Month (which, BTW has been celebrated since the 1969 riots at the Stonewall Inn in Manhattan, a tipping point for the gay liberation movement in the U.S., according to the Library of Congress).

But the June LGBT Pride celebration has spread far beyond Manhattan and the annual Pride parade; rainbows now mark acceptance and LGBT support year-round and around the world. Nike, which launched a special EQUALITY initiative in February 2017, is keeping the pride alive with their latest release: a rainbow-hued collection of shoes and apparel that encourages you to "Be True."

The BETRUE 2017 collection launches on June 1 on Nike.com and at Nike retailers with four different sneakers—the Nike Classic Cortez BETRUE, the Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 34 BETRUE, the NikeLab Air VaporMax BETRUE, and the Nike Flyknit Racer BETRUE (from left to right below).

The annual BETRUE collection started six years ago as a grassroots effort led by passionate Nike employees who wanted to foster the idea that diversity creates better communities and encourages innovation and growth.

It also includes both men's and women's apparel: a Nike Dry Muscle Tank, Sportswear Tee, T-shirt, and pair of Nike Elite Cushion Crew Running Socks.

ICYMI, women are having sex with other women more than ever before—yet LGBT individuals are getting worse health care than their straight peers. Not cool. That's just one reason that showing your pride and support is so important. (We also love this gear that supports women's health organizations.)

Nike isn't just focusing on including the LGBT community in their inclusive initiative. The EQUALITY collection—which is made to encourage people to take the fairness and respect they see in sport and translate them off the field—started with a Black History Month collection in February.
