The same way “We Will Rock You” can rally pro athletes and rabid fans at sports arenas, it can motivate you to crush your workout. Listening to songs with such thumping bass lines can help you feel more powerful, according to research from Northwestern University.

This works because deep sounds and voices are associated with confidence and strength, says study author Dennis Yu-Wei Hsu, Ph.D. And while this may help you hoist heavier weights in the gym, there’s likely more than just the physical payoff: A bass-heavy playlist like the one below may boost mental confidence as well—like before a blind date or a presentation at work.
