There is no national certification program and no licensing for yoga teachers. So how can you tell if yours is competent? One sign is membership in a recognized professional association. The American Yoga Association ( americanyogaassociation.org), for instance, recommends that instructors meet several requirements, including daily practice of yoga and adherence to ethical-behavior standards. And the Yoga Alliance (yogaalliance.org) has a voluntary Yoga Teacher Registry of 1,000 instructors who have completed at least 200 hours of training in yoga techniques and philosophy, teaching methods and anatomy. Instructors who pass can write RYT (Registered Yoga Teacher) after their names. Specific schools of yoga, such as Iyengar, also certify instructors who are proficient in teaching that type of yoga
