Participate in National Yoga Month 2009

By Rebecca Brown

September is a benchmark for the yoga community as it kicks off the "yoga for health" movement, recently recognized by the Department of Health and Human Services. Find out how you can participate in National Yoga Month.

Try It Out
Across the country, teachers and studios are opening up their doors and offering one full week of free yoga. If you're interested, go to yogamonth.org and print out the Yoga Month Card. You'll be able to use it to redeem your free week at tons of locations.

Give Back
Want to do more than just take a few classes? Sign up and become a volunteer. Opportunities run the gamut from helping out at local festivals to spreading the word through yogamonth.org and other social media.

Celebrate
An assortment of country-wide activities are capped with some of the largest events during Yoga Month. The Global Mala Yoga for Peace Event kicks off on the 19th, and uses 108 sun salutations, rounds or mantra, and kriya to bring together the global yoga community, forming "a mala around the earth." If you happen to be in Los Angeles the next day, head to the Global Celebration, a free over-the-top festival where you'll join over 1,000 yoga enthusiasts, partake in free classes, and spend the day learning from tons of health and green exhibitors.
