Got GERD symptoms, including stomach pains? The first step of GERD treatment involves making lifestyle and dietary changes.

Common Causes of Stomach Pain, # 2:

You're popping over-the-counter remedies, instead of watching what you eat. Everyone takes the occasional Tums, but if you're downing over-the-counter acid blockers morning, noon and night, you may have GERD, gastroesophageal reflux disease, a chronic condition caused by stomach acid that moves from your belly into your esophagus, usually a result of a weakness in the muscular valve that separates the stomach and the esophagus.

A 2005 review published in the medical journal Gut concluded that up to 20 percent of all Westerners suffer from GERD symptoms -- and the first step toward getting healthy involves making lifestyle changes, such as watching what you eat.

Specific foods -- namely citrus fruits, tomatoes and tomato sauces, chocolate, wine and caffeinated beverages -- can trigger GERD symptoms. To help with GERD treatment, your doctor may also have you keep a food diary for two weeks so you can pinpoint which foods are particular problems for you, adds Roshini Rajapaksa, M.D., a gastroenterologist at the New York University School of Medicine.

One tip to reduce stomach pains: Fill up on fiber-rich foods like fruits, veggies and whole grains and limit saturated fat. A Baylor College of Medicine study found that people who ate high-fiber diets (at least 20 grams a day) were 20 percent less likely to suffer from GERD symptoms, and those who ate a diet low in saturated fat also cut their odds.

Common Causes of Stomach Pain, # 3:

You're simply stressed beyond belief. Ever wonder why you end up having to run to the bathroom every time you're up against a tight work deadline or anxious about a fight with your husband? When you're frazzled, elevated levels of stress hormones activate the normal contractions of both your stomach and colon, causing them to go into spasms, says Patricia Raymond, M.D., a GI doctor at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Va. (Stress hormones also can contribute to the overproduction of stomach acid, making you more susceptible to GERD symptoms.)

On top of that, stress often begets poor eating (think fatty, processed chips and cookies with very little fiber), which can cause constipation, and even more bloating. When you know you're going to have a tough day, plan to eat regular small meals so you're not too hungry or too full and avoid overindulging in caffeine -- all of which can trigger stomach pains.

Then get moving: An aerobic workout (aim for at least 30 minutes) won't just help get rid of stress, it will also help counter any constipation by speeding up the movement of food through your digestive tract, Raymond says.

I think this article is great! I suffered intensely when I was about to graduate university, all the stress made my intestines crazy but once the stress was gone... the intestines stayed irritated though it wasn't as intense. I did IgG, celiac, allergies, sugar intelorance and everything tests! Only to be diagnosed with IBS because everything came back negative and that I was as healthy as can be! So Ladies, if you have IBS like me here is what you need to do: examine which foods and behaviors trigger your IBS and stock up on grapefruit seed extract. I realized caffeine was killer for me so I stopped coffee and I felt so much better. But after a while it started to be the same again... so I stopped chocolate (it has caffeine) and alcohol completely. I had no more stomach pains for no reason! I used to feel the food being digested because it was painful. I started a cure of grapefruit seed extract (a few drops each day in a glass of water or juice) and wow, it was like I never had IBS! I personally think IBS is a recurrent inbalance of intestinal flora and hyper sensitivity to certain irritants (caffeine, alcohol..). The bacteria in there goes kinda crazy so by taking grapefruit seed extract which is a gentle broad spectrum antibiotic and anti-fungus, you should feel better! I personally take 5-7drops a day for 2-4 weeks and then I'm all good for a few months if I stay away from chocolate, coffee and alcohol.

I think its great to know that I am not the only one who is suffering from the horrible discomfort of IBS. I too had all the medical procedures to discover that IBS is the main cause of my suffering. The constant bloating and colics is so uncomfortable especially if you are out for dinner and suddenly your pants are too tight and you are full of gas. I too have notice that caffeine, chocolate and sugar triggers all the symptoms. Eating fresh fruits also has the same effect on my... after I researched IBS I realized that the fiber in fruits such as apples is very difficult to digest hence I now have to steam my apples then throw them in the blender... It's made a world of difference for me having all my fruits and vegies steamed. Haven't tried the grapefruit seed extract yet but will definately do.. so thanks for the advice....

I have IBS and have struggled with it for many years. My worst flare-up lasted nearly a year and I lost over 25 lbs. I tried every possible combination of medication only to be slightly relieved and left a walking zombie (sleepiness was a side effect of all of my medications!). In February of this year I decided to start eating healthier and exercising and I can say that it has made a WORLD of difference. I have yet to have another flare-up (knock on wood). The things that have helped me the most is: BEING ACTIVE!!! I run 3-4 times a week and do some resistance training. DRINKING LOTS OF WATER!! I never ever drank water. I hated it. But now I'm drinking over a liter of water a day and I'm trying to build up to 2. EAT YOGURT!! I eat Stonyfield Farms Organic Yogurt. I throw in some fruit and some granola and it is delicious. It has 6 strains of Probiotics in it. This has definitely helped in regulating my bowels. EAT WHOLE WHEATS and LOTS OF FIBER!! I gave up white starches for whole grains!! AVOID EXCESS SUGAR!! I cut out massive amounts of sugar! I'm feeling so much better than ever before because of these small lifestyle changes. I couldn't imagine having to stay on medication. Try these suggestions first. I can vouch that Peppermint works as well. I haven't tried the capsules but I do occasionally have Peppermint Tea and it always helps to relax my stomach. Best of luck to anyone suffering from this horrible condition. Things can and will get better if you'll just educate yourself and experiment!!! God Bless!
