FACT Actually, it might be the source of your pain. Trying to find a back-friendly bed is like playing Goldilocks: A too-soft mattress doesn't offer enough support, while a rock-hard one can increase pressure on the spine. A study in the journal Lancet found that those who snoozed on a medium-firm mattress experienced less back pain—and popped fewer pain relievers—than those who slept on a harder one. I found this to be extremely informative. I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, chronic pain, and chronic fatigue syndrome. Because of these conditions it has been increasingly difficult being a single mom, a full time worker and with trying to lose weight that is the ultimate obstacle. It is very true that many including doctors feel that these conditions are all in a persons mind due to there being no test to determine the cause of the pain. I have finally after over 4 years found a doctor that reminds me it is not in my mind even if he no one can see it. Thanks for bringing up such a troubling subject to a forum, especially when more woman than men suffer from these conditions.

This information is very useful, especially for someone new to dealing with pain. I have been in chronic pain for two years, and just completed Mayo Clinic's two day pain rehabilitation program. They highlight a lot of this information, and highly stress the importance of relaxtation. I'd like to add that while breathing is helpul, diaphragmatic breathing is best. If you place a hand on your chest and a hand on your stomach, your chest shouldn't move but your stomach should move in and out. That's how you know your diaphragm is being used, and its very good at helping you relax and reduce your stress!
