Dunkin' Donuts Is Ditching the Coffee Coolatta for a New Frozen Drink

Frozen blended coffee beverages like the Starbucks Frappucino and Dunkin' Donuts Coffee Coolatta have been staples in American coffee culture for years. Because what else do you drink in the summer when you're craving dessert at 7 a.m. and want to call it breakfast?

But this summer will be different; Dunkin' is officially retiring the Coffee Coolatta and replacing it with a new frozen beverage called "Frozen Dunkin' Coffee" by summer 2017, according to a Dunkin' Donuts rep. The new drink is inspired by iced coffee and blends a "special extract" containing Dunkin' Donuts coffee with ice and dairy to offer a "more authentic, energizing coffee drinking experience compared to the Coffee Coolatta," according to Chris Fuqua, Senior Vice President of Marketing for Global Consumer Insights & Product Innovation for Dunkin' Donuts.

And possibly the best news ever; you can snag a free 3.5-ounce sample of this new frozen bev from participating DD locations nationwide on Friday, May 19 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Considering a small regular Coolatta with cream tops off at a whopping 490 calories, 23 grams of fat, and 69 grams of sugar (that's more than an entire day's worth of sugar!), here's hoping that the new Frozen Coffee Option will be a little more coffee and a little less sweet stuff. But, naturally, people are freaking the eff out that Dunkin' is getting rid of their fave caffeinated treat. Not to worry, though, because the new Frozen Dunkin' Coffee will still contain liquid cane sugar, as reported by CNBC. (Here's what you need to know about what sugar does to your body and whether it's a toxic substance or not.)

And this isn't the only big news coming your way from Dunkin'. In case you don't have enough coconut in your life (we're looking at you, coconut oil, coconut milk, and coconut beauty products), you can now amp up the tropical factor of your coffee order just in time for spring. Dunkin' Donuts just launched their new releases for the season—including the new Coconut Créme Pie flavor, returning fan favorite Butter Pecan, and two fruit iced teas.

It's no surprise that coconut is ~so hot right now~. The number of coconut-flavored food products in the marketplace has more than doubled over the last five years, according to flavor experts at Firmenich, a flavor and fragrance creation company, who also named coconut the Flavor of the Year in 2016. You can now order your hot or iced coffee, latte, or macchiato in Coconut Créme Pie (a combo of vanilla, coconut, and sweet pie crust flavors) or in Butter Pecan (a returning favorite with butter roasted pecan and sweet cream flavors). The new fruited iced teas include freshly-brewed 30% Rainforest Alliance Certified Black or Green Tea mixed with fruit juice and topped with real pieces of fruit, in either Mango Pineapple or Blackberry.

Even though coconut is a super buzzy health food and the name "fruit tea" seems healthy enough, that doesn't mean these babies are healthy to chug on the reg. Keep an eye out for nutritional info once it's out on the Dunkin' website. Liquid calories can easily sabotage your healthy diet.

Instead, follow these tips to healthify your coffee order—so you can have your coconut and eat it too.
