There are some crazy gourmet nut butters out there—and they also tend to be crazy expensive ($25 for 16 ounces?!) and pour in the sugar (9 grams per serving!). No prob: With a food processor and four basic ingredients, you can blend your own for much cheaper and concoct flavors that brands would never even dream of trying to sell.
All of the spreads in the graphic below taste great on whole-wheat toast and various chips and crackers—or just grab a spoon! Also be sure to try French toast butter with apple slices, pizza butter thinned as a pasta sauce, spicy Thai butter in wraps, and barbecue butter on chicken.
Directions: Combine all ingredients in a food processor and add 1 tablespoon neutral-flavored oil such as canola. Process until smooth and creamy, scraping down the bowl periodically. (Be patient; it can take a few minutes.) Store butters in the fridge.
