Want a moist, meaty burger without lots of fat? Try a veggie patty! They come in two styles: Firm soy-based burgers with a charred-beef flavor that mimics a real hamburger; and soft grain-vegetable burgers seasoned with goodies such as beans, garlic, chilies and cheese.
"Veggie burgers are a great source of protein, and most are low-fat," says Sheah Rarback, M.S., R.D., assistant professor at University of Miami School of Medicine and a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association. "Most are fiber-rich and cholesterol-free, although some have small amounts of cheese."
Whether you regularly say no to meat or simply want to cut back your consumption, veggie patties are an easy-to-make beginning to a healthy meal. Just add lettuce, fresh tomatoes, some onion and other vegetables to your plate for even more fiber and nutritional value.
