Its not the fat in foods that makes you feel full.
That greasy cheeseburger will leave you feeling full all day, so its worth the splurge, right? Wrong! Fat is the slowest food component to clear the stomach, so for years it was assumed that fatty foods slowed digestion and kept you feeling full longer. Recent research proves otherwise. In our studies, we varied the proportion of sugar and fat and found little or no differences in satiety ratings, says Barbara J. Rolls, Ph.D., professor of nutritional sciences at Pennsylvania State University and author of The Volumetrics Eating Plan (HarperCollins, 2005).
In fact, protein tends to leave people feeling more satisfied than either carbs or fat, Rolls says. The problem with fat is that it has more than twice the calories of protein or carbs.
To eat more and weigh less, reach for foods high in fiber, like fruits and veggies and whole grains. Fiber and whole grains affect feelings of fullness and satisfaction, Rolls says. We dont know exactly why, but [fiber and whole grains] could affect the hormones that send the signal to your brain that youve had enough to eat.

Same here! I'm so glad to know that's it not just me! I love apples though. I'd started eating carrots with garden veggie cream cheese and that seems to last a little longer!

Apples have fructose (fruit-sugar) which if you aren't eating frequently enough or your blood sugar is out of wack can cause blood sugar spikes just like candy or soda. (All fruit can). Sure it's good sugar, but the response can be the same. It is good to eat it with some protein but really the solution is to monitor your blood sugar responses and get tuned into your body. I can't eat fruit if I'm not careful about it for the glycemic response it can illicit. I have to eat frequent meals throughout the day to avoid blood sugar spikes -- riding the sugar rollercoaster. This means three meals and two snacks. The protein that you mention adding (peanut butter and/or cheese) can often have sugar too. Dairy has milk sugars and peanut butter can have sugar if you don't buy the natural "no sugar added" variety.
The solution is to figure out how your body responds to different foods. One way to really learn is try a stringent diet for a week or two.
