Ask The OB-GYN

by Tracy W. Gaudet, M.D.

Q: Are there any health risks to practicing Pilates or yoga when youre menstruating?

A: Not at all. Your period may be the best time to work out, as exercise can ease many menstrual symptoms including cramps and feeling blue. However, I would caution you to pay special attention to stretching and avoid overdoing flexibility work during the middle of your cycle. Around day 20, levels of hormones such as estrogen and relaxin that relax your joints are highest, increasing injury risk. Ive found that many women often feel more energetic (and even more coordinated!) during the first half of their cycle, making it an excellent time to push yourself a little harder.
