Cause a Stir

There's a big uptick in the beauty category known as bi-phase, and the latest products make getting a luminous look as simple as whipping up salad dressing. Just like oil and vinegar, the ingredients in these formulas have distinct densities, which make them separate and sit in layers. "Shake the bottle to mix the elements and you'll activate them," says Jim Hammer, a cosmetic chemist in Uxbridge, Massachusetts. The benefits of this active solution are especially enticing when it comes to foundations, lip colors, and eye shadows. The pigments are combined with oils and/or water to create a sheer yet vibrant color payoff. Your skin receives a hydrating boost as well, Hammer says.

Even better: bi-phase isn't only for cosmetics. You can find shake-and-apply skin and hair products that pack double the benefits. Try our picks below, or check out our 2016 Beauty Awards to get scope out even more of our beauty team's favorites.

Sea salt sprays are fab for creating straight-from-the-beach texture and waves, but they can dry out your strands. The oil phase in Bumble and Bumble Surf Infusion softens hair, offsetting that effect. ($29; bumbleandbumble.com) (Don't save the sea salt for your hair; these skincare products also get boosts from the sea.)

Get a sheer tint plus shine and moisture with a bi-phase lip color like Lancôme Juicy Shaker Pigment-Infused Bi-Phased Lip Oil. Think of it as a stain and an oil treatment in one. Unlike traditional stains, which stick to skin in an instant, these slick formulas give you some leeway. Use the built-in applicator to spread the liquid on the center of your lips and blend it out toward the corners of your mouth for the most natural effect. ($21; lancome-usa.com)

A bi-phase eye shadow like Josie Maran Coconut Watercolor Eye Shadow helps you achieve gorgeously shimmery eyelids—without the greasy side effects that most shiny eye shadows bring. You'll get a vibrant hue from the oil-based pigments, and the water in the formula will help smooth the shadow on and then evaporate, leaving behind a saturated color that won't budge. The oil-based formula has hydrating coconut water and metallic pigments infused with argan oil for a stunning high-beam finish that nourishes eyelids while glamming. ($18; josiemarancosmetics.com)
