Everyone loves giving gifts that go unused, right? (Not.) Well if you’re planning on buying gift cards for your friends and family this year, that may very well end up being the case. (This year the cards account for $124 billion in sales, up from $118 billion last year, and $80 billion in 2007.)

And if you’re planning on shelling out for gift cards this year, you’re not alone. The MarketWatch article reported findings from the National Retail Federation that shoppers will spend $173 on gift cards this year, which is $10 more than last year. But we have a better idea. Rather than give your sister, mom, or best friend a piece of plastic that she’ll carry around unused for the next 12 months, choose something from our guide: The Best Gift Ideas for Men, Foodies, Fashionistas, and Fit Women in Your Life.
