A New Clear-Skin Strategy

Solodyn is one of the latest ways to fight acne

Prescription medications are often the treatment of choice for moderate to severe acne, but many women can't tolerate the side effects. Fortunately, several new drugs are delivering results-with fewer adverse reactions. "Some dermatologists are choosing to put their acne patients on Solodyn, an extended-release minocycline. This form of the antibiotic carries less risk of headache, dizziness, and nausea," says Hilary Baldwin, M.D., an associate clinical professor of dermatology at the State University of New York. Another new option for the yeast infection-prone (antibiotics kill the bacteria that keep yeast in check) is controlled-release doxycycline, which is not an antibiotic at all, but rather a potent anti-inflammatory that can help reduce the redness and size of pimples.
