This Monday is Columbus Day! What the what, you might ask? I know, it seems like one of those holidays that can sometimes fade into the background. Unfortunately, Columbus Day weekend is actually the most expensive fall weekend to travel and many Columbus Day deals have blackout dates. Luckily, we managed to find some cheap, last-minute steals. If you're itching for a spontaneous road trip, check out these fun vacation destinations!
1. The Inn at Cape Cod, Yarmouth Port, Mass. There's nothing like celebrating Columbus Day in New England. From October 3 to October 6, you can snag a room at the historic Inn at Cape Cod for $199 per night (normally, rooms start $295) and be a short walk away from the beach, museums, and great dining. One thing to note—the inn is "not suitable for infants and children under the age of 16." Family-friendly it is not. On the other hand, if you're looking to get out of the city for a weekend, or an intimate, romantic weekend away, this could be the perfect place!
2. Ritz-Carlton, Tuscon, Ariz. As one of the newest Ritz-Carlton properties, the Ritz-Carlton at Dove Mountain (just north of Tuscon) is offering a sweet deal: All guests receive a $100 resort credit (per night!) and a complimentary "discovery" hike when they stay. Best of all, this deal is valid through December 31, 2011, so if you can't make it out this weekend, don't worry, you've got plenty of time to check it out!
3. Postcard Inn, St. Petersburg, Fla. If the sudden fall weather has you longing for those sunny days by the water, look no further. The Postcard Inn in St. Petersburg is offering a "weekend wipeout" deal for Columbus Day. Rooms start at $87 per night, and each one is equipped with a flat-screen TV and wifi. As this is famed restaurateur Steve Hanson's first foray into the hotel business, there are also two restaurants on-site. Need more of a reason to check it out? The hotel advises you to dress appropriately by donning "cut-offs, flip-flops, bathing suits and bare feet." Sounds like our kind of place!
