New technology lets you hike the Pacific Crest Trail with Reese Witherspoon
Fans of Cherl Strayed's massively popular book Wild say they felt like they were right on the trail with the author while reading her memoir of hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. Turns out, a few lucky people will actually be able to hike through one of the Wild movie scenes with Reese Witherspoon, who plays Strayed in the movie version of the book (out in select theaters now)—virtually, at least. The New York Times reports that Fox Searchlight and its partners plan to unveil “Wild—The Experience” next month at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas as well as The Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.
The three-minute, 360-degree virtual reality experience, which is viewed through Samsung Gear virtual reality goggles attached to a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 smartphone, changes based on how the viewer behaves in the scene (think walking alongside Reese as she hauls her backpac, or sitting down next to her instead). Don't have tickets to Sundance? Even if you miss Fox’s virtual reality experience, you can still go behind the scenes to watch as Wild Author Cheryl Strayed Talks Hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. She shares details of her personal struggle, the preparation needed to battle the elements for 1,100 miles, and how the journey changed her, physically and mentally.
