Generation Smut: How Millennials Watch Porn in the Smartphone Age

Remember when porn used to live in the cramped, 'Adults Only' back room of video rental stores, and not, um, on your smartphone? Face it—porn, and how we interact with it, has changed a lot in the past 15 years or so, thanks mostly to technology and the Internet. And now there are stats to prove it.

A new collaborative study by PornHub and Mic took a look at the porn viewing habits of millennials (users aged 18 to 34) versus those of older generations (users aged 35 and older). Using anonymized demographics data and PornHub's internal analytics software, the study revealed some interesting—if not entirely surprising—facts about how generational smut viewing habits are shifting.

According to the study, millennials stay up later, have shorter attention spans, and are more likely to turn to the convenience of their smartphone rather than sitting down at a desktop to watch erotica in its full HD glory. In other words, the stereotypical traits experts attribute to millennials are apparently so ingrained that they even come out in our steamiest of habits.

PornHub found that millennials typically log on between 11 p.m. and midnight (a full hour later than the 35+ crowd) and spend approximately nine minutes and 10 seconds on the site (a full minute less than the older generation).

Millennials also overwhelmingly turn to smartphones for their fix. Sixty percent of millennials look at PornHub on a smartphone, while only 33 percent use a desktop computer. But is this because millennials like their content on-the-go, or is it because they're more tolerant of seeing sexy details on smaller screens? Only seven percent of millennials view PornHub on a tablet, compared to 15 percent of the 35+ crowd. (Need to upgrade your gadgets? Younger women are more likely to watch porn too: 24 percent of PornHub's millennial user base is female compared to only 21 percent of their seniors. The younger crowd also seems to be more into fitness and less into smoking, as millennials search for terms like "gym" and "yoga" on PornHub almost twice as much as do 35+ users, and are 48 percent less likely to search for the term "smoking" (hey, we don't question what people are into). (Follow these 5 Masturbation Tips for a Mind-Blowing Solo Session.)

In other words, those of us who are under 34 are all a bunch of easily-distracted, nocturnal fitness nuts who are addicted to our smartphones. But the desire to watch skin flicks? That transcends generations.
