Mapping my progress

The other day I was going on and on to my friend Lana about the joys of running, but she was unconvinced. "The treadmill just seems so pointless to me," she said. "All that work, and you never get anywhere!" It made me laugh, but it also got me thinking: How far would I go if I wasn't running in place or in a loop around my house that leads me right back to where I started? So as a fun little motivator, I hung a big map of the United States on my wall and started tracking my progress on it. Every day after my workout, I use a highlighter to mark off my miles on a route heading east out of Los Angeles. At the rate I'm going, I should reach Las Vegas by the end of July. And by this time next year, I’ll have made it all the way back to my old stomping grounds in New York City.
