Romantic comedy queen Sandra Bullock was born on July 26, 1964 in Arlington, VA, to a German opera singer and a voice teacher. Growing up on the road, she often performed in the children’s chorus and had already made her first stage appearance at only 5 years old for an opera in Nuremburg, Germany. With an extreme love for the stage, Bullock continued to study acting throughout college in North Carolina, until she eventually dropped out just three credits shy of her bachelor’s degree to follow her dreams in New York.
Soon off-Broadway came calling. When she was 21, Bullock landed a part in the play No Time Flat, which helped her secure an agent and a role in the TV movie Bionic Showdown: The Six Million Dollar Man and the Bionic Woman in 1989. From there, small roles in several indie projects followed, in addition to the lead in the short-lived NBC television version of the film Working Girl. She went on to appear in a few films such as Love Potion No. 9, The Thing Called Love, and Demolition Man in 1993. A year later, Bullock finally earned widespread recognition with the huge box-office hit Speed alongside Keanu Reeves, and a movie star was officially born.
Since then, Bullock has had a steady stream of commercial success with big budget movies like While You Were Sleeping, A Time to Kill, 28 Days, Miss Congeniality, Murder by Numbers, Two Weeks’ Notice, The Lake House, The Proposal, and The Blind Side, a project that awarded her an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Actress. After a well-deserved break, Bullock made a huge return to Hollywood in 2013 with the The Heat alongside Melissa McCarthy and Gravity with George Clooney, a film that garnered more than $600 million at the box office and also generated Oscar nominations and wins.
The ageless a-lister credits a healthy diet, daily workouts, and an active lifestyle for her sexy, strong, and slim bod. She’s been spotted exercising six days per week for 60 to 90 minute sessions with her trainer, Simone De La Rue, incorporating a mixture of dance, cardio, yoga, and Pilates into her routine. Bullock says the variety keeps her regime fresh without getting bored, but certainly her on-camera career provides some major motivation! “People ask, ‘How do you actresses do it?’ Um, they pay us to do this in order to look good on film!” she’s joked. —Kristen Aldridge
