Getting a kick out of my workout

February 19, 2009

I’m working on a TV pilot that features a crime-fighting superhero. It’s inspired me to improve my own sparring skills (and burn a few calories). I was originally going to take karate—something I did every week when I lived in New York City five years ago. It was a lot of fun and helped me deal with stress, but because we practiced on other people, I ended up getting covered in bruises. I mentioned this to my trainer from Equinox, Lauren Kern, who told me I could get a lot of the same benefits—but without the black-and-blue marks—with kickboxing. I did some research and found an instructor who teaches a high-intensity, low-impact variety called Muay Thai. It targets my core and breaks up the monotony of running all the time. A bonus: I’m learning moves that my main character can use in future episodes.
