Get fit without the gym!

These six moves target all your major muscle groups and tone your core.

By Leslie Ryan

Not everyone has an extra room in her house to devote 100 percent to a home gym. But even if all you have is a multitasking living room or den, dont worry, you can still get an ultra-effective workout at home. This strength workout, created by Jon Giswold, a group exercise leader and certified trainer in New York City and author of Beyond Basic Training (St. Martins Press, 2005), turns any room into a functioning fitness center using easy-to-store equipment from Shapes own home gym kit.

All you need are 20 minutes and these six essential moves, which do double duty by either working your lower and upper body in the same exercise or by recruiting your core muscles to maintain balance as you work another muscle group. Youre getting more muscles involved than in just single isolated moves, Giswold explains. With the time you invest, youre getting greater results and more for your investment.

Plus, weve added four body-slimming cardio routines, with 30- or 40-minute options. The result? A smaller waistline and strong, toned arms and legs. Now you can make over your body without ever leaving the comfort of home!
