Start training for a spring triathlon
Last year almost half of the participants in the top U.S. races were women. Get moving this winter and you can join them by May. Linda Cleveland, a USA Triathlon-certified level II coach, shares her best tips.
- Pick a date
Signing up for a race will keep you moitvated to train during cold weather. Just give yourself at least three months of lead time.
- Get help
Whether it's your first or 10th tri, a coach, or club will help you design and stick with a program. Find a support system at usatriathlon.org.
- Take it all inside
"If it's too dark, cold or icy outside, run on a treadmill and take advantage of group cycling classes," says Cleveland. Most athletes swim inside all year long, so find an indoor pool and you'll be set.
- Prioritize
"Focus on bike skills, because that's where you'll spend most of your time during a tri," says Cleveland. "But do all three activities each week and give extra attention to your weakest sport."
