Venus Wins Wimbledon
Venus Williams won her fifth Wimbledon women's singles title (and seventh Grand Slam) on July 5. She beat her younger sister, roommate and doubles partner, Serena, in straight sets at the All England Club. Just hours later, the Williams sisters played together in the women's doubles final, winning their third Wimbledon pairs title. With two championships in one day, Venus proves she's at the top of her game.
The 28-year-old athlete has come a long way from Compton, California (a suburb of Los Angeles), where she grew up playing on the public courts. After turning pro at age 14, she won her first Grand Slam at 20. Inspiring women on and off the court, Venus was instrumental in getting Wimbledon to award equal prize money to men and women. Now, with two gold medals to her name, she'll try to serve up another victory at the Beijing Olympics.
