Rocking the Ombre Highlights Trend

Alexa Chung is the poster child, and Rachel Bilson and Drew Barrymore are fans. Yes, we're referring to the haircolor trend that's taking celebrities by storm: ombré, n., a French term meaning "shades or gradation in tone." Translation when it comes to your tresses? Dark roots and lighter, bleached-out ends, beginning mid-shaft.

So yeah...we know it's not for everyone. However, this style is super-handy if you're looking to cut down on salon visits, since there's basically no maintenance. I was a bit skeptical about this coveted color trend, too—until I tried it myself. I turned to Rachel Bodt, a senior colorist at Cutler Salon in NYC (and fellow ombre admirer!), for my strands-formation. After four hours of painting, foiling, and glazing, I emerged from the salon with an edgy, easy-going look that won't break the bank.  Color me thrilled!
