Sloane Stephens on Diet, Fitness, and Beating Serena


Sloane Stephens has definitely earned a name for herself. The 19 year-old professional U.S. tennis player wowed audiences when she beat the highest ranked American, Serena Williams, to get to the semifinals of the Australian Open recently, creating tons of buzz about her young talent.

Currently ranked a career-high 17th, Stephens recently experienced an abs injury that will keep her from playing on the U.S. Fed Cup team in Italy this weekend, but she is planning to resume play in Qatar next week. In the meantime, she chatted with SHAPE about her favorite workout songs, as well as which male tennis pro she'd most like to compete against.

SHAPE: How did it feel to beat Serena?
SS: It felt great to get to the semi-finals of a major event. Serena is a great champion, so it's a good feeling to know I can compete with the very best.

SHAPE: Who would you rather go up against: Roger Federer or Andy Roddick—based on looks, not skill?
SS: Good question...I'll go with Fed!


SHAPE: What do you always carry in your tennis bag that might surprise us?
SS: Hand sanitizer.

SHAPE: Do you wear makeup on the court?
SS: I don't wear makeup on the court, but I always wear sunblock. I love getting done up and wearing makeup away from the court though!

SHAPE: What do you typically wear both when working out and not working out? Any favorite brands?
SS: I love lots of different designers. Right now I really like Michael Kors, Helmut, Jimmy Choo, and All Saints. But I spend most of my days in Under Armour.

SHAPE: What foods do you always have in your fridge or always have with you when traveling?
SS: I always have applesauce in my fridge, and when traveling I take protein bars just in case I get hungry. They're my go-to snack.

SHAPE: What does a typical week of workouts look like for you?
SS: I train Monday through Saturday. I usually have fitness training for 90 minutes, then I'm on the tennis court for 3 to 4 hours.

SHAPE: Which songs are currently on your workout playlist?
SS: Lots of Beyoncé, like "Love on Top," and Nicki Minaj. Sometimes I go-old school with songs like Run DMC's "It's Tricky."

SHAPE: What is your best advice on how to maximize performance?
SS: Never ever give up! Keep your goal in your mind and always fight for what you want.
