Find out which emoji has been named the top 'word' of the year
The most popular word of 2014 is in, and—in a true sign of the times—it's not even a word. It's the heart emoji (♥). This marks the first time a symbol has earned this honor from the 15th Annual survey of the English language by the Global Language Monitor, an Austin-based group that tracks language trends.
The GLM claims to base their report upon actual word usage throughout the English-speaking world (you know, all 1.83 billion plus people)—to qualify, the words must be found globally, have a minimum of 25,000 citations, and must be used in various forms of media universally.
The group also found the top name of the year to be Ebola, which beat out Pope Francis for the number one spot.
Here, their complete list of the most popular words (let's just be grateful 'bae' didn't win out):
1. The Heart ♥ Emoji (for love)
4. Blood Moon
6. Photo Bomb
8. (White) privilege
10. “Bash” Tag
And there you have it, official permission to communicate only in emojis tonight.
