Overnight Oats

Friends, I have found the perfect dorm room breakfast. It’s healthy, hearty, customizable, delicious hot or cold, cheap, and requires almost no preparation. Didn’t think that was possible?

Neither did I, until I stumbled upon Brittany Mullins’ health and fitness blog, Eating Bird Food. She shares my love for stovetop old-fashioned oats and invented a way to have them waiting for you, in all their creamy goodness, when you wake up in the morning. This has become my go-to breakfast on any given morning; I’ll make them in a bowl if I plan to linger in my room for a while, or in a 2-cup size Tupperware if I have to run off to a class or meeting.

Here’s how!


- ½ cup old-fashioned oats

- ½ cup skim milk or milk substitute (I use Silk Vanilla Almond Milk.)

- ½ banana

- ½ tsp cinnamon

Mix all ingredients in a bowl or Tupperware and set in the fridge overnight. When you wake up in the morning, the oats will have soaked up the liquid from the milk and all you have to do is stir, top with whatever you like, and enjoy! For hot oats, microwave for 2 minutes or a little less, then add toppings.

Toppings I like: almonds, vanilla non-fat yogurt, nut butter, dried cranberries or pineapple, raisins, peach slices, dates, crunchy granola, apple butter, berries, etc.
