In honor of Ovarian Cancer Awareness month in September, several brands and organizations are working to raise awareness and funds to find a cure for the disease, a deadly form of cancer known as “the silent killer.” You can do your part too, by sweating or shopping your way to a future where ovarian cancer is easier to identify, prevent, and conquer. Here, a few of our favorite ways to lend your support to the cause.
Run a 5K
Lace up your sneakers and sweat for a cure. Run for Her, a 5K run and friendship walk, has been hosted in Los Angeles for 10 years (this year’s takes place on November 9), and it’s touching down in San Francisco for the first time on September 20. This organization was started by Kelli Sargent, who was motivated after watching her mother battle the cancer. To date, Run for Her has raised over $6 million to date for the Cedars-Sinai Women's Cancer Program at the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute. All race proceeds go straight to that cause to keep the research going.
The Bright Pink fundraiser targets fitness-focused women interested in working out for a cause and heads to Cleveland for the first time on September 28. The full-day event will be packed with workout classes from the area’s top instructors, wellness seminars, beauty treatments galore, and lessons to sharpen up participants’ knowledge of two cancers that threaten women: ovarian and breast. The event is tied to $500 fundraising efforts, which also benefit the cause.
Buy a Stylish Jenny Packham Clutch
The French beauty powerhouse teamed up with famed British designer Jenny Packham to create the Jenny Packham for Laura Mercier clutch ($300; lauramercier.com). The statement-making accessory takes a style cue from a clutch that Kate Middleton carried to a 2012 gala and features glitzy Swarovski crystal and luxe satin in teal, the signature shade of the campaign against ovarian cancer. Best of all, 100 percent of the proceeds benefit Laura Mercier Ovarian Cancer Fund, which helps fund programs that treat women with the disease.
Protect Your Mat with a Yogitoes Yoga Towel
Need an extra push of motivation to get through your yoga session? Join SEE Eyewear’s Protect Your Privates Campaign
The eyeglass maker urges women everywhere to smarten up about Ovarian Cancer this month with its Protect Your Privates campaign. Every Monday in September, SEE donates a portion of that day’s proceeds to support Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, which funds research efforts to identify a cure to treat the cancer.
Purchase a Photograph or Timeless Timepiece
In partnership with Ovarian Cancer National Alliance, Jaeger-LeCoultre, a luxury watch-making brand, announced a 2014 push dedicated to fighting ovarian cancer. To kick things off, photographer Howard Parr, who lost his stepmother to ovarian cancer, photographed survivors living their actives lives, engaging in activities from gardening to golfing. A portion of the proceeds from the limited-edition prints will go to the Alliance. Plus, if you buy one of the watch-maker’s five women’s timepieces on teal alligator straps on sale now, 10 percent of each sale will benefit the Alliance.
