Do the X Games Aspen Predict Olympic Champions?

ESPN Images

If you've learned anything from watching the Golden Globes followed by the Academy Awards, it's that winning at one major event doesn't always secure a sweeping victory at the next. Like the Oscars, the Olympics are anyone’s game.

But one thing's for sure, the X Games Aspen shines the spotlight on some of the best and brightest athletes to watch at the Winter Olympics. Of the 38 X Games Aspen 2014 athletes who have competed in a previous Winter Olympics, 10 have taken home a total of 13 Olympic medals (three athletes have earned two) in the past.

Is their X Games Aspen victory a predictor of Olympic success? Well, in 2010, snowboarders Seth Westcott, Shaun White, Hannah Teter, and Kelly Clark won medals in the X Games Aspen in January and then went on to medal the following month at the Vancouver Olympics (gold, gold, silver, and bronze, respectively). In 2006, White also celebrated back-to-back wins at the X Games and the Turin Olympics, but he wasn't the first winter athlete to nab the two highest honors in the sport. Clark, the most decorated female athlete in X Games history, claimed the double-gold crown four years earlier at the Salt Lake City Olympics. [Tweet this fact!]

Twenty-four athletes—a mix of Americans, Canadians, Norwegians, Germans, French, and Czech—medaled in Aspen and have the chance to podium again in Sochi. It should be noted, however, that Olympic favorites White, Teter, and Torah Bright (a four-time X Games medalist and 2010 Olympic gold medalist) did not compete at the X Games this year, so you never know what will happen come February.
