Target Photoshop Fail Ignites Thigh Gap Debate

The Ethical Adman

In the days of Photoshop edits and Instagram filters, we’re used to images being altered. But the latest photo fail isn’t just a bad use of the Kelvin filter, it’s a total disaster. A swimsuit from Target, featured in the Juniors' section no less, has been drastically Photoshopped to not only slim down the model’s left arm but also cut out part of her crotch to make it look like her legs don’t touch, illustrating a disturbing "thigh gap." (Read more about this and other common body goals that are unrealistic for most women.)

The swimsuit bottom is no longer on the site, but you can see the clearly altered left arm in the Xhilaration Juniors' Midkini Swim Top, modeled by 24-year-old R’el Dade.

Though drastic editing certainly stirs a discussion about the thigh gap, it’s worth noting that while it’s an unattainable body goal for many, some women’s bone structure is just like that, as can be noted in this photo that Dade posted on her own Instagram. While Dade hasn't commented on the matter, Target released a statement to Buzzfeed: "This was an unfortunate error on our part and we apologize. We have removed the image from our website."
