Step up your winter street style with cute and warm boots that can handle Mother Nature's worst
Most of the country is suffering the wrath of winter right now, which means we all need some trusty footwear when we brave the great outdoors. Ankle booties, pumps, even our trusty ballet flats just don’t cut it in the snow. That makes heavy-duty snow boots an absolute necessity, at least during our commutes (ugh, thanks, January!). Since the go-to functional winter shoe for women, L.L. Bean’s iconic Bean Boot, has been on backorder since December, it's the perfect time to look at other durable yet fashionable boots this season. To keep your feet warm and dry without feeling sartorially uninspired, I’m sharing with you my top three standouts for fashion-meets-function all-weather boots in 2015. (And don't forget your functional winter workout gear: The Best Running Shoes for Winter Weather.)
In case you missed it in What's Trending with Tara: Slope Style, the snow bunny looks of the '80s are back—and that includes moonboots! Aptly named for their resemblance to astronauts’ footwear, these boots offer a playful addition to our practical winter wardrobe, thanks to their thin rubber outsole, cellular rubber midsole, and fur or colorful nylon coverings. Ditch those boring Uggs and add some excitement to your outerwear!
This brand has become synonymous with quality winter boots, which isn’t surprising when you consider the company was started in Ontario—a place where harsh winter weather is simply a part of life. Recently, Sorel has done a brilliant job maintaining their traditional and functional elements, like vulcanized rubber and faux fur trim, while incorporating slimmer silhouettes and sexy heights, earning their boots the status as the It boot for après ski. What better evidence than the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, where the most stylish film-going celebs and pretty much every fashionable girl on Main Street can be seen rocking these boots? With features in Vogue and on fashion blogs, it’s clear that Sorel boots are a smart staple for your winter wardrobe.
These classic wellies have been best sellers for years, and still continue to break the rain boot mold! While they aren’t the warmest winter shoes, they will definitely keep your feet dry (and give you a chance to wear cute, wooly socks to insulate!). With a travel-friendly roll-up version, a trendy fringe-embellished option—not to mention, a stylish collaboration with Rag & Bone—these boots are outpacing all other rain boots. And with the highly-anticipated Hunter Original High Heel Chelsea Rain Boot to hit the U.S. this month, Hunter boots are once again changing the rain boot game. With a 3.5-inch chunk block heel and lug sole (resembling the Alexander Wang booties), these boots are nothing short of fabulous. And as spring approaches, keeping your feet dry on mucky streets will still be a priority. Rest assured these rain boots are on my spring must-haves list too.
