What's Trending with Tara: 1960s Mod

With this last month marking the birthday of style icons Bridgett Bardot and Lesley Lawson (Twiggy), I am feeling especially inspired to embrace this season's mod trend. From Twiggy’s intoxicating androgynous looks to Bardot’s feminine sexual nature, the swinging '60s inspired women to challenge the conservative expectations of what one was supposed to wear. I know I’m not the only one feeling this girl-power vibe lately either. Just last week, Karl Lagerfeld ended Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2015 fashion show in Paris with a mock feminist protest, drawing parallels to a student riot in 1968. A-list models carried picket signs shouting “Be Different,” “Feminism is Feminine,” “Make Fashion Not War,” and the like.

Whether seen on catwalks or worn by chic celebs, the swinging '60s trend is varied, and everyone is putting their own unique spin on it. From literal interpretations (a la Twiggy) to subtle mod-inspired accents, such as mini-boxy handbags, it’s a huge decade with a bit of something for everyone.

To give your look a nod to mod, think bold color-blocking or sleek monochromatic outfits. Opt for A-line or tailored pieces. When wearing these silhouettes, you can balance your proportions by pairing a boxier top with cigarette pants or fitted boots. And speaking of boots, it’s difficult to imagine the 60s without those statement-making thigh-highs. But don’t cover too much, because above all, short skirts and mini-dresses dominated the era.

Still, if you don’t feel comfortable baring so much leg (or it’s just way too cold) try pairing your shift dresses and minis with opaque tights—both bold and neutral colors are appropriate for the trend. Lastly, remember to balance the edginess of shorter hemlines with more conservative necklines. Turtlenecks, tailored shirts, knits, or blouses with a pussy-bow or a prim collar are very in. The silhouettes of this area are bold, playful, and celebrate women in all their glory. So lets come together ladies and get our groove on!
