What's Trending with Tara: Fashion Sweatpants

Karsten Staiger

As the potato pancakes, gingerbread cookies, and Champagne toasts come to a close, the last thing I feel like doing is getting dressed up—which is why rocking a pair of fashion sweatpants sounds so appealing. Fashion and sweatpants are not two words that go together without some hesitation; however a new set of chic and sleek options are causing me to change my mind. Following in the footsteps of the velour tracksuit and Juicy pants, the sweatpant trend continues to enjoy its status as totally acceptable streetwear—although arguably more stylish this time around.

When paired with the right pieces, this slouchy style works for more than the gym or a quick run to the supermarket. Whether dressed up or down, rocking sweats can add a perfect little mix of careless confidence to help you kick off these first weeks of the new year in style.

Try swapping out a tailored trouser for some soft sweats, throw on a classic blouse and pointed-toe heel, and you have yourself a trendy getup that will comfortably take you from office to happy hour. Or keep your sweats weekend-casual by pairing them with a loose t-shirt or knit and a street sneaker. Top your look off with a leather moto jacket or tailored blazer to give your outfit some added structure.

So go ahead, get comfy and funky in some sweatpants. But try to stick to these three tips to keep your look on point and flattering:

  • Opt for shades of gray or black. Anything bright or colorful will make you look too collegiate. You can still embrace those lazy mornings and bad weather, but if you keep your sweats muted in color, they can look sharp.
  • Keep that tush tight. Fit them like you would your favorite pair of jeans, not too tight in the front but perfectly snug around your bum—no sagging! Don’t forget the best part about sweatpants is that they stretch, so there is no need to oversize.
  • Scrunch them up. Push the elastic up, or peg and roll up the ankle like you would a pair of boyfriend jeans. This will prevent the pants from overwhelming your frame while offering some extra swag.

We'll be looking at knit hats, skiing couture, and more trending styles in the upcoming weeks so be sure to come back. Don't forget to tag your Instagram posts with @tarabryanstyle for your chance to be featured!
