Put a fresh spin on traditional knits with these contemporary style tips
Drop your pants, the sweater dress is back! Though the garment is nothing revolutionary, it’s relaxed, easy to wear, and totally on-trend nonetheless. This season, put a spin on traditional sweaters in the form of head-to-toe knit outfits, namely sweater-and-skirt pairings. When styled correctly, the sweater dress falls into that category too, still offering its signature balance of comfort and sexiness while also appearing modern. This look is not for the faint of heart, so I definitely wouldn’t suggest anyone layer knit upon knit (I can feel myself itching as I write), but I do have a few fresh ideas for updating your sweater dress so it’s fitting for this season’s styles.
The sweater dress is a no-brainer closet staple, think “one and done!” Whether I’m going to Sunday brunch or to dinner with the in-laws, it’s perfect for almost any occasion and it’s so simple to wear: Pull it on, zip up some boots, and top it off with a blanket coat or cape before heading out the door!
As winter approaches and temperatures drop even lower, bearing so much leg won’t be ideal. When that happens, I plan to drop the hem of my sweater dress (so it covers more) or pile on more knits in the form of a woolen skirt paired with a chunky knit top. The snug fit of the skirt, even when worn with a slightly oversized top, helps avoid that granny look while still achieving a head-to-toe knit style.
There is no shortage of ways to style knits this season, but when you're going for that-all knit outfit, make sure you sleek your feet with a nice pair of shoes, like sexy heels or thigh-high boots. It’s always a good idea to mix different textures too, so top yourself with a faux fur coat or leather jacket to add a dimension to your overall look. For even more modern polish, ditch your hobo bag and opt for a boxed clutch or a structured, ladylike purse. And don’t be afraid to add some swanky jewelry to dress up a simple sweater dress— one of the greatest things about the all-knit look is that you can never look overly done!
