During today’s meeting with my nutritionist, Ruth Frechman, R.D., I realized yet again how differently I’m treating food these days. I used to mindlessly eat junk—and a lot of it. I just never gave a hoot about how many calories I was consuming. But once I started learning about correct portion sizes and the nutritional content of different foods, that thoughtless chewing has disappeared. Just being aware of how high in calories and fat those cookies are makes downing a dozen a lot less enjoyable. They say that knowledge is power, and in terms of making healthier food choices, they’re right!
