Do you have one of those classic dorm mini-fridges with a teensy fridge and a microwave and a coffee maker stacked on top? I do! It’s stocked a little sparsely right now but I’m planning a trip to the grocery store tonight and here’s what I like to keep in:
- Nonfat vanilla yogurt
- Honeycrisp apples
- 2% Mozzarella string cheese
- Baby carrots
- A red bell pepper
- A tub of hummus
- A cucumber
- A gallon of organic skim milk
- Seasonal berries or other kinds of fruit
- Sealed containers of leftover food I get from restaurants and other places (currently, there’s a lot of pizza and half a sweet potato that probably needs to be thrown out!)
Since I share the fridge with a roommate I have to make strategic decisions bout what to squeeze in there. I eat most of my lunches and dinners at an eating house (my college’s slightly different take on sororities) so my fridge and cupboard only need to cover breakfast and snacks. As you know, I have a major sweet tooth and if baked goods are around, I have a super hard time resisting them. If fruit, cheese, veggies and hummus, roasted almonds, etc are readily available to me, I reach for those when my stomach grumbles between meals. Check out these 15 healthy foods to have in your kitchen at all times (most of them are good for dorms too)!
I’ll share some of my most delicious dorm-room breakfast secrets in the next post, since it’s my favorite meal of the day.
What’s in your fridge right now? What changes do you want to make to it?
