On Saturday, my girlfriends and I got together for a new year’s happy hour and the topic of resolutions came up. But none of the women in the group said they were going to lose 10 pounds or run a marathon. Instead they all mentioned small (read: attainable) goals. One notoriously messy pal is going to make her bed every day. My favorite couch potato will do something active for at least 30 minutes four days a week. And my friend Sarah is going to give people—including those who cut her off on the freeway and her snippy co-worker—the benefit of the doubt.
I love these resolutions! They’re all simple changes that can have a big impact. So, in the spirit of small changes, I resolve to:
- Try running again. Before I broke my collarbone I was really getting into it, but since then I haven’t even laced up my sneakers. I know that if I just do it I’ll get excited about running again.
- Prepare one healthy dinner a month. Dave does all the cooking, and while our meals are delicious, most are high in calories and fat. He’s convinced that healthy foods aren’t satisfying, but I know I can prove him wrong.
- Call a friend every Sunday. E-mail and Facebook have replaced my phone conversations—especially with friends on the East Coast. I miss my girls, and I’m determined to stay in better touch with them.
Here’s to a happy, healthy 2010!
