This Total Diva has worked her butt off in the WWE for the last 10 years, and now she's celebrating her "best body ever" and new engagement to John Cena.
This past Sunday at the WrestleMania 33 (basically the Super Bowl of wrestling hosted by the WWE), Nikki Bella—one of the biggest female stars of the sport—got the surprise of her life when her now-fiancé, John Cena, popped the question in the middle of the ring in front of more than 75,000 screaming fans. Yeah, even grown men were crying.
You may know Nikki from the E! show Total Divas, which gives a behind-the-scenes look at the women in the WWE ring, or from the spinoff show Total Bellas with her twin sister and fellow wrestler Brie.
Although Nikki's been working her (bad)ass off in the wrestling ring for 10 years (alongside Brie as the Bella Twins), it was this past year when she says she got into the best shape of her career.
She admits that being filmed live on HD TV every week for WWE's SmackDown can be scary, because every pound on the scale and every curve of your body is magnified. But she's never been one to cower. That's probably why her "Bella Army" of fans call her Fearless Nikki.
She raises the barre to get that killer booty.
To be at her most confident and to be her best, most fearless self in the ring, you might think that Nikki spends her time training with intense powerlifting and a diet of red meat, grilled chicken, and steamed veggies, but you'd be wrong. In fact, Nikki says she's tried this heavy lifting method in the past, but the results left her feeling uncomfortable in her body, not to mention that she found pumping iron to be a bore. Instead, you might be surprised to learn that this Diva gets her sweat on much like anyone else. Her secret to a strong, lifted booty and killer V-cut abs? A simple combination of thoughtful eating and Pure Barre, she says.
"For those 55 minutes of Pure Barre, I can turn all my focus to my health and working my body," says Nikki. "My sister Brie was the one who got me into it. I thought it would be easy, but after the first class I wanted to give up...and I used to squat 220 [pounds]!" With every class ending with some moves that focus on burning out your core, it's easy to see how she got that chiseled, made-for-crop-tops belly.
She takes her inspiration from an original Diva.
It was none other than the queen of curves, Jennifer Lopez, who first inspired Nikki as a young girl to embrace her fuller, stronger figure. "I was going through puberty and was much curvier than other girls, which made me insecure," she says. "Then I saw J.Lo on the cover of Latina magazine, and she embraced those curves and was proud of who she was."
Growing up playing soccer and other sports gave Nikki a more athletic build, which she came to love because she says those sports taught her how to have inner strength. "Believing in yourself and having confidence gives you outer strength." When asked why she loves her shape (just the way it is), Nikki had this to say: "It's how God made me. I see traits of my body in my mother and grandmother and it makes me proud. This shape isn't going anywhere."
There's always room for a milkshake.
Shying away from bizarre trend diets, Nikki's eating habits are focused like a professional athlete, but with room for splurges. "I do everything in moderation and count everything...that includes my wine," she says.
While gearing up for a shoot or live event, Nikki says she'll watch what she eats and how many calories she's consuming, trimming back where she needs. "Something like avocado, although it's a healthy fat, is very high in calories, so if I know I want dessert and a glass of wine for dinner, I won't get avocado on my salad at lunch," she says. When her "close-up" is over, Nikki's eating gets less restrictive, but always remains healthy and balanced. She won't deprive herself of chocolate and wine because she says her body will only crave them more later. In fact, she admits, "When I got engaged, we went out for pizza, then the next night John and I had pancakes and milkshakes."
