With the onslaught of attention from a very public divorce and a new relationship, LeAnn Rimes has had her share of challenges and stress this year. Some days, she says, "getting to the gym was a big accomplishment. It really did make me feel better and kind of saved me. It gave me a bit of sanity." The workout that gets her de-stressed and keeps her in top shape: Boxing. Here she shares her favorite moves.

In this SHAPE interview, she also reveals the lessons she's learned, including as Rimes puts it, "cultivating strength from rough situations." Through it all, she also learned the importance of taking care of herself. "I've always been one of those people who takes care of everyone else-and their needs-first. This past year, for the first time ever, I put me first. I'm sure some people are thinking that I was totally selfish, but the truth is, there are times in your life when you have to be selfish in order to find out what truly makes you happy." Here, LeAnn Rimes (whose new album, Lady & Gentlemen, hits stores October 5) explains how she discovered her true inner voice-and got in her best shape ever.
