Alison Brie has been a source of workout inspiration for us all, thanks to the insane strength exercises she keeps sharing on Instagram. But when she recently decided to create her own training plan, Alison was the one trolling IG for gym ideas. (Related: The Exercises Alison Brie Did to Train for "GLOW" Season 2)

In April and May, the actress spent six weeks in Bandon, Oregon while filming The Rental, an upcoming horror film written and directed by her husband Dave Franco. While she didn't need to be in GLOW-level fighting shape for the role, she chose to set her own training schedule to maintain her fitness and feel good.

Alison has been working out with Jason Walsh (who also trains Emma Stone) and other Rise Nation trainers pretty consistently for the past eight years, so when she started planning her workouts herself, it took some adjusting. (Related: What a Perfectly Balanced Week of Workouts Looks Like)

"I really depend on Jason and the other trainers there when I'm home in L.A.," she tells Shape. "I usually do three to four days there and then three days of cardio or yoga. It was a real change to be in this very small town with a little gym and really have to put together my own workouts." (Related: How to Create Your Own Muscle-Building Workout Plan)

While in Oregon, she mapped out her weeks to include three strength days and three cardio days. Every night, she'd plan out her next training session, utilizing workouts from fitness Instagrammers like Claire P. Thomas as well as circuits that her trainers had previously given her to follow while out of town. (She likely included exercises like heavy deadlifts, hip thrusts, and front squats, which were all central to Alison's GLOW training.)

She also made an effort to learn more from other gym-goers. "There was another woman at the gym who lived in the area and she was super fit," she says. "I would see her put together this whole apparatus to do hip thrusts," she says. "...I just kind of walked over and introduced myself and was like, 'what have you got going on here?'" To maintain a sense of balance while working out during the day and filming at night, she added Manitoba Harvest CBD oil to her daily nighttime tea. (Alison has partnered up with the brand.) "Sometimes you shoot late and you go home and your mind is just spinning, and I've found that Manitoba Harvest CBD oil is a great way to kind of calm my mind and prepare for sleep," she says. (Better sleep is just one of the many benefits of CBD, according to science.)

Taking her fitness routine into her own hands proved to be "fun and also a little bit stressful," because she wasn't always sure she was working as hard as she would with the help of a trainer. From the sound of it, though, Alison really made the most of her solo time.
