Can Your Lips Get Bigger During Pregnancy?
Fillers? Nah, girl. It's hormones.
Beyoncé makes everything look beautifully easy, but she makes pregnancy look downright incredible. How does someone look that good ever, much less while growing not one, but two, whole human beings inside her? Well, some people think her pregnancy glow isn't all natural and she's getting a little outside beauty help, saying the singer got "gigantic Kylie Jenner" amounts of filler injected into her lips. But Queen Bey is having none of that nonsense. Her publicist, Yvette Noel-Schure, explained that Beyoncé's lips are 100 percent real, and she wasn't happy about the accusations.
"Did you know that in addition to weight gain there is often a dramatic change in the blood flow in the system and increased fluid causing swelling? Do you know that often women's gums get swollen? Do you know that it sometimes affects our speech, our ability to chew intently and a host of other things?" writes Noel-Schure. "But the sacrifice to our faces, our feet and our entire bodies is something we welcome because we bring beautiful humans into the world who will one day combat your hate and negativity."
She's right. "Swelling is common during pregnancy due to increased blood flow and hormone changes," says Melissa Goist, M.D., ob-gyn at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. And it's not just the lips on your face that get plumper, Dr. Goist adds. Pregnancy affects all your mucosal membranes, including your vaginal lips and even the lining of your nose, which causes many pregnant women to report feeling chronically stuffed up.
And Beyoncé's rep was correct saying that pregnant women are at a higher risk of oral inflammation and gum disease. "Hormonal changes that occur with pregnancy influence the bacterial flora in your mouth, which can cause significant gingival inflammation and hypertrophy," Dr. Goist explains. "This is why good oral hygiene for all women, but especially pregnant women, is a must."
Any other accusations, Beyoncé haters?
