From the outside looking in, Kate Hudson "has it all."
The 39-year-old has a successful movie career spanning more than two decades; a family that includes the embodiment of #ParentGoals: mom Goldie Hawn and stepdad Kurt Russell, plus two beloved children (and a third on the way with the love of her life!); and a wildly popular activewear subscription service, Fabletics. On paper, Hudson's living the dream, but she'll be the first to admit that true happiness is more than the ticking of boxes on an imaginary checklist.
"I've always had an issue with people trying to sell happiness," she tells InStyle ahead of a panel discussion on "Redefining the Pursuit of Happiness" at Popsugar's Play/Ground. "There's no one way to find happiness because it's a subjective experience." (Related: Science Says These Apps Can Really Fight Anxiety and Depression)
Speaking to the recent spate of suicides in the public eye (Kate Spade, Anthony Bourdain), Hudson debunked the idea that privilege is a fast track to bliss. "They've done so much research now that shows it doesn't matter where you come from, or how much money you have … A very relevant topic right now—depression, that kind of disease, that kind of sickness … It doesn't discriminate." She continued, "And finding that kind of happiness is a very active process to work on, it's not something that just happens." Hudson acknowledges that while "some people are just born with an optimistic gene," they are few and far between. "We are fight-or-flight animals," she said. "We are constantly on the lookout, and we've had to retrain our brains to calm that down and open up those areas of our brain and recognize that's no longer the response we should have towards things, and we can become more optimistic about certain things in our life, but we have to be mindful and aware of it. To me, happiness and mindfulness, they have to happen together." (ICYWW This is Your Brain On Depression)
Speaking of mindfulness, Hudson has been an active proponent of the Hollywood-wide Time's Up movement, keeping a watchful eye as industry ideals turn to reality.
"There's obviously a dialogue that's happening right now that's really important, more present and at the forefront, which is a nice thing," she tells us. I think that now it's just about what the follow-through is and how certain things are executed, and it's an ongoing process. I'm very lucky—I've had great experiences in my working life. Next up for Kate, of course, is preparing for the arrival of her baby daughter with boyfriend Danny Fujikawa—a welcome addition to her male-dominated family. "I don't feel any differently," she said, referring to the unique challenges of raising a girl as opposed to her two boys (Ryder Robinson, 14, and Bingham Bellamy, 6), "but I'm excited that we're going to even out the gender ratio in the house." Though her third pregnancy clearly hasn't slowed the Fabletics co-founder (too much, at least), she's admittedly "taking it easy" when it comes to her workout routine.
"I've never really been an avid yoga person, but pregnant yoga's been predominantly what I'm doing," Kate shared. "I've really enjoyed it, and I've enjoyed who I've been working with—pregnant and prenatal yoga is a different kind of process because it's really all about the baby, which is a really nice feeling."
Hudson was one of a lineup of A-list speakers at N.Y.C.'s Popsugar Play/Ground that included Tiffany Haddish, Mindy Kaling, and Yara Shahidi. Guests were treated to a girl power-driven weekend that included workout classes, special activities (like the highly Insta-worthy ball pit), and booths and goodies from brands like Tarte and Huda Beauty.
