Lucy Hale Shares Why Putting Yourself First Is Not Selfish
"Not only is it healthy, but it's necessary so that you can be the best for everyone else around you."
Everyone knows that taking a little "me" time is important for your mental health. But it can be hard to prioritize above other seemingly more "important" things. And despite the fact that more than half of millennial women made self-care their resolution for 2018, some women still feel guilty for it-believing that putting themselves first somehow makes them selfish. Pretty Little Liars alum Lucy Hale felt the same way-until a solo trip changed her perspective entirely.
"For the last week I took a solo trip to Arizona," she wrote on Instagram alongside a series of photos of herself (plus some cacti and healing crystals). "I spent my days hiking, meditating, and spending time with myself. I've never done this before because I used to feel that putting myself first was selfish. It's not."
Hale says she realized that the benefits of self-care weren't actually limited to herself. "Not only is it healthy, but it's necessary so that you can be the best for everyone else around you," she wrote.
She continued by explaining why everyone should make time for self-care-even if they feel like they have none. "I know this happens in other industries other than the one I'm in, but it's incredibly easy to get sucked into the vortex of worrying about the next job, the success of a current one and what others think of you," said Hale. (Here are 20 other self-care resolutions you should make.)
"This trip was a beautiful reminder that my health and happiness are crucial to the life I want to live and in order to be the best for my career and my loved ones, it's necessary to do really nice things for yourself. SO, I highly recommend treating your mind, body and spirit right (and taking a solo getaway)."
Hale's post is a wonderful reminder that the busier and more stressed-out you are, the *more* important it is to carve out some time for yourself. Your mind and body will thank you for it-and so will everyone else in your life.
