When it comes to her beauty routine, it's safe to say Mindy Kaling likes keeping things simple. The comedian and actress revealed during a recent interview for People's 2022 Beautiful Issue that in addition to wearing little makeup, one of her secrets for beautiful skin is a humidifier.

"This isn't sexy, but my humidifier has completely changed my beauty," said Kaling during a video interview with the publication shared on Instagram. She further explained that her favorite thing about using a humidifier is the convenience. "We're told that we're supposed to work out and stretch and eat right and only have salmon and drink green smoothies, but the greatest thing is when you can just push a button and feel like you're making yourself more beautiful and healthy," said the The Office alum. "So, I love my humidifier because it does that for me."

While you might think of a humidifier as something you use to help relieve a stuffy nose or cope with allergies, Kaling is right that using a humidifier can actually benefit your skin. "When humidity is low, and the air becomes dry, it can lead to dehydrated skin," Ryan Turner, M.D., dermatologist and founder of Turner Dermatology, previously told Shape. "Dehydrated skin lacks water and may feel dull, rough, and tight. Using a humidifier can help by adding moisture to the air. This may help reduce dry or cracked skin, especially overnight when skin cell regrowth and repairs are at their peak." (

As Dr. Turner mentioned, to reap the benefits of a humidifier for skin, ideally you'll use one every night while you sleep. That's when your body's hydration rebalances, meaning it's more prone to moisture loss or gain, Dendy Engelman, M.D., F.A.A.D, FACMS., New York-based dermatologist, previously told Shape. You'll be benefitting from two practices at once — sleep happens to be another habit Kaling said makes her feel most beautiful.

"Given what my life is like, beauty is just either being actually well-rested or being able to fake looking well-rested," she said in the recent interview. "If you can look like someone who's gotten six to eight hours of sleep, I think you look great." (

So, if you're searching for a low-effort way to boost your current skin-care regimen, you can follow Kaling's lead by investing in a humidifier and prioritizing sleep.
