Sarah Hyland Says She's Had 16 Surgeries Related to Her Kidney Dysplasia
That includes two transplants.
Modern Family's Sarah Hyland is known to be unapologetically candid about her personal life. She's bravely opened up about her struggles with mental health and her experience with sexual assault, as well as her issues with body image. She also keeps fans in the loop about her health-particularly her lifelong battle with kidney dysplasia.
If you're not familiar with the condition, kidney dysplasia is a result of kidneys not developing properly in the womb, leading to the formation of painful cysts and other complications, according to the National Institutes of Health. Hyland has already had two kidney transplants because of the condition-one in 2012, and another in 2017 when her body began rejecting the first transplant. (We're still in awe that Selena Gomez received a kidney donation from her best friend )
As if that doesn't sound difficult enough to deal with, in a recent interview with Good Morning America, she revealed that she's actually had a total 16 different surgeries related to her kidneys since she was born.
"Most of the surgeries I had were before I was 4, so at least that's kind of a distant memory," she said on GMA, adding that the cast of Modern Family has helped her get through all of the toughest times. "They can always tell if I'm not feeling well, even our prop guys," she said.
Something else that's been a major part of her support system? Dogs. "Dogs are the greatest thing ever to happen in the world," she said. "Dogs are amazing, they really get me through a lot."
Today, Hyland seems to be doing well but shared how it takes work to keep her chin up given everything she's been through. "You have to actively stay positive throughout things," she said. "It can take a toll on your mental health and on your body, but as long as you surround yourself with the right people and stay positive, I'm good."
