Meet the CrossFit Games 2017 Winner and Fittest Woman On Earth, Tia-Clair Toomey

You don't need to WOD on the regular to enjoy the annual Reebok CrossFit Games. Athletes show up from all around the world for a chance at becoming the Fittest Man or Woman on Earth, putting on a show that's impressive even to those who've never set foot in a box. (Last year, there was even a CrossFit Games wedding!)

The 2017 CrossFit Games were no exception. Australian athlete Tia-Clair Toomey just claimed her place as the new Fittest Woman on Earth, taking the title from last year's champ, Katrín Tanja Davíðsdóttir of Iceland, who finished fifth this year. Toomey's reign has been a while coming; she finished as runner-up in 2016 and 2015, both years behind Davíðsdóttir. And she recently made her Olympic debut, representing Australia at the Summer 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janiero last summer, taking fifth in her group for the sport of Olympic weightlifting (a staple in CrossFit workouts, ICYDK). (These benefits of Olympic weightlifting might convince you to give it a try yourself.)

"To be honest, you have to think about everyone who's there to support you (and) remember all the work you put in," said Toomey in a statement to the CrossFit Games. "(I feel) great, on top of the world."

Toomey edged out second place finisher, Kara Webb, by just two points. The final scores: Toomey with 994, Webb with 992, and Annie Thorisdottir with 964. Toomey demolished the competition during the Muscle-Up Clean Ladder workout (eight rounds of alternating bar muscle-ups and cleans), nabbing first place, and placed in the top five for the Heavey 17.5 workout (alternating thrusters and double-unders) and the Madison Triplet workout (five rounds of 450-meter runs and hay bale clean burpees).

Inspired by Toomey? You're not the only one. Even if you're nowhere near doing one muscle-up (let alone eight rounds of four reps), you can start with this beginner CrossFit workout that only requires a kettlebell. Ready to chug the Kool-Aid? Find one of the best CrossFit boxes near you. (Fuel the fire with last year's most-inspiring CrossFit Games moments.)
