The Benefits of Grapeseed Oil for Hair and How to Add It to Your Routine

Adding an oil to your hair-care routine is a personal journey. While some people find that coconut oil is unmatched, others might swear by argan oil, and still others might decide they're better off skipping oil altogether. Depending on your priorities, the ingredient may be worthy of a spot in your routine. Here, get the details on the main grapeseed oil hair benefits and exactly how to use the ingredient, according to Arash Mostaghimi, M.D., M.P.A., M.P.H., dermatologist and advisor of dermatology at Hims and Hers.

Q: I want to start using a hair oil but so far the ones that I've tried have been too heavy. Is grapeseed oil good for hair and would it weigh down my fine hair?

A: Grapeseed oil can potentially promote hair growth and strength, but research hasn't definitely proven that to be true, according to Dr. Mostaghimi. It's relatively lightweight, and can suit people with fine hair (along with other hair types), he says.

Fun fact: Grapeseed oil is a byproduct of the winemaking process. The oil is extracted from — you guessed it — grape seeds that are removed from grapes used to make wine, according to an article published in the journal Nutrition and Metabolic Insights.

The resulting oil has a few key properties that are relevant to hair and scalp application. "Grapeseed oil has a light texture, doesn't have any smell, and is non-comedogenic, meaning that it is less likely to block pores or cause acne than other oils," says Dr. Mostaghimi. It also has some noteworthy potential benefits.

Grapeseed Oil Benefits for Hair

As with other oils, grapeseed oil can be used to moisturize your hair, points out Dr. Mostaghimi. Oils can help fill gaps in strands' outermost layer (known as the cuticle), which can help prevent moisture loss that leads to dryness, according to an article published in the International Journal of Trichology.

So far, research on the benefits of grapeseed oil specifically is limited, says Dr. Mostaghimi. "There is some data from animal models suggesting that grapeseed oil may promote hair growth and strength, but this has not been explicitly studied in humans," he notes. During a study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, researchers applied a solution containing proanthocyanidins, compounds found in grape seeds, to the skin of mice, over the course of nearly three weeks. The mice showed significant hair growth compared to a control group, leading the study authors to suggest that proanthocyanidins may help stimulate the anagen (aka growing) phase of the hair cycle.

A major selling point of grapeseed oil: It's suitable for just about everyone. "Unless you have an allergy to grapeseed oil, there is very little downside to using it," says Dr. Mostaghimi. "Excessive use can weigh down hair and make the scalp greasy, but regular use in normal amounts is a reasonable option for [people] of all genders and hair types." 

How to Use Grapeseed Oil for Hair

Grapeseed oil is readily available online and in grocery stores. If you're interested in adding grapeseed oil to your hair-care routine, experiment with the oil to figure out what works best for your hair and meshes with your existing routine, says Dr. Mostaghimi. He provides the following suggestions:

  • As a leave-in treatment. Once or twice a week, apply a few drops of grapeseed oil to your hair and/or scalp, leave it on for 20-30 minutes, then wash your hair as normal.
  • For a moisturizing boost on wash day. Mix a small amount of grapeseed oil with your shampoo or conditioner when you're washing your hair for an additional moisturizing boost.
  • For styling. If you're prone to dryness and frizz, apply a few drops to the lengths of your hair after showering to help reduce frizz and improve moisturization.

Even if you've found other oils too heavy, you may come to find that grapeseed oil is a worthwhile addition to your hair-care routine. You can choose from a variety of methods to use the ingredient for moisturization or get in on the potential benefits of grape seed oil for hair growth.
