Chobani Releases New 100-Calorie Greek Yogurt
Yesterday Chobani introduced Simply 100 Greek Yogurt, the "first and only 100-calorie authentic strained Greek yogurt made with only natural ingredients," according to a company press release. [Tweet this exciting news!]
Each 5.3-ounce single-serve cup of Simply 100 has 100 calories, 0g fat, 14 to 15g carbs, 12g protein, 5g fiber, and 6 to 8g sugars. Compare this to Chobani's Fruit on the Bottom products, which have 120 to 150 calories, 0g fat, 17 to 20g carbs, 11 to 12g protein, 0 to <1g fiber, and 15 to 17g sugars: You're saving, at most, 50 calories. Worth it?
I typically suggest the 140-calorie variety of yogurt with 2g fat to my patients. I have always felt that a little fat helps to keep them more satisfied, and I never want them obsessing over calories but rather thinking about the nutritional value of a food. When it comes to yogurt, I always stress the importance of protein and calcium and where the ingredients come from (natural or artificial).
With Simply 100, you are definitely getting a good product. For those patients of mine who are diabetic or insulin resistant, I like the lower grams of sugars, especially since it is done all naturally with monk fruit, stevia leaf extract, and just a touch of evaporated cane juice. The addition of fiber from the chicory root extract is an added bonus since too many people I know still don't eat enough fiber, and we all know by now that fiber helps to keep us fuller. And no matter how often I tell my patients to choose a plain yogurt and add their own fresh fruit for fiber, it doesn't always happen.
I think when it comes to yogurt there might not be a one-size-fits-all. Everyone comes in different shapes and sizes, and has different exercise routines and different calorie needs. And as much as I do not like to focus on calories, for many people who need to lose weight, every little bit does count. Personally I will probably stick with the higher-calorie version and fat because that is what works for me. However it is good to know that other healthy versions are available. Thank you, Chobani.
