Every weight loss coach, doctor, and psychologist has a list of ways to get healthy and stop eating junk food. The problem is not all of these tips and tricks are created equal. Simply cleaning out your refrigerator, pantry, countertops or desk of any unhealthy foods will help remove temptation. You'll be amazed how this simple act can make you feel more in control of your eating and food choices. The saying "out of sight, out of mind" really works!
I'm not advocating giving up all of your favorite unhealthy treats, I just believe that not having them readily available will allow you to make better choices. If you have to go out of your way to get them, you'll be more likely to think twice before doing so. In fact, studies show that we consume more food and calories when food is within our line of sight and/or readily available and less food and calories when it's out of sight or inconveniently located.
A study by Brian Wansink, Ph.D., and professor and director of the Cornell University Food and Brand Lab demonstrates this idea. Researchers gave secretaries jars filled with 30 Hershey's Kisses. Each week over a three-week period they would place the jar in a different location in the office. The first week, the jar was placed on the edge of the subject's desk. The second week, it was placed in a desk drawer and during the final week, it was placed on a file cabinet six feet away. Daily consumption of the Kisses went from nine pieces when the jar was on the desk, to six pieces when it was in the drawer to only four pieces when it was six feet away on top of the filing cabinet.
This is all to say if you keep unhealthy snacks in your pantry, refrigerator, on your kitchen counter or office desk, you're likely setting yourself up for failure. Try replacing unhealthy foods with healthier options and keep the healthier options in a convenient and easily accessible location.
This simple, yet powerful, change may just be the number one way to help you consume less junk food and more healthy foods.
